Rhino Tracking

zhiwa rhhinos

Uganda lost its wild rhino population to poaching and civil unrest decades ago, but Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is bringing them back. Located in Nakasongola District, about a 3-hour drive from Kampala, Ziwa is the only place in Uganda where you can track southern white rhinos on foot in their natural habitat — and it’s an easy add-on to a Murchison Falls safari or a standalone day trip.

What to Expect

  • On-Foot Tracking — Accompanied by armed rangers, you’ll walk through the savanna to find the rhinos, sometimes getting within a few meters. Briefings on safety and rhino behavior are given before every walk.
  • Sanctuary Overview — Ziwa is home to over 30 rhinos, most born on-site as part of Uganda’s reintroduction program, along with other wildlife like antelope, buffalo, and over 350 bird species.
  • Boat Cruise Option — A short cruise on the sanctuary’s lake is available for birdwatching alongside the rhino walk.
  • Duration — Tracking typically takes 1–3 hours depending on how far the rhinos have moved; best done early morning or late afternoon.
