The Equator Uganda

equator guide with dinno

Uganda is one of the few countries in the world that the Equator passes through. At the crossing point, you can stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and the other in the Southern Hemisphere. It is a short, easy stop and one of the most photographed landmarks in the country.

The most popular crossing is at Kayabwe in Mpigi District, on the Kampala-Masaka highway. Because it sits on the main road to western Uganda, most travelers visit it on the way to their safari or as a half-day trip from Kampala.

Where Is the Equator Crossing?

Kayabwe is roughly 70 to 80 kilometres from Kampala, about an hour and a half by road depending on traffic through Mpigi. The monument is right beside the highway, so it is easy to spot.

There is a second equator crossing on the Kasese-Mbarara road near Queen Elizabeth National Park. If your safari takes you through the western circuit, you will pass it on the way.

What to Do at the Equator

  • Take the classic photo at the equator markers and circles painted across the road.
  • Watch the water demonstration. Guides pour water through a basin at different points on the line to show how it appears to behave differently in each hemisphere. It is a fun demonstration that visitors enjoy, though the effect is largely a guide’s trick rather than a true scientific test.
  • Shop for crafts. Stalls and small shops sell baskets, wood carvings, paintings, jewellery, and other Ugandan souvenirs.
  • Get a certificate. Many visitors take home a certificate marking their crossing of the Equator.
  • Stop for a drink or snack. There are small cafes and restaurants around the monument, which makes it a comfortable break on a long drive.

Best Time to Visit

The Equator can be visited all year round. The dry seasons, December to February and June to August, make for the easiest driving and the best photos. During the rainy seasons, the road is still fine, but showers can interrupt outdoor stops, so carry an umbrella.

Aim to arrive in the morning if you want fewer crowds and softer light for photographs.

How to Get to the Equator from Kampala

The easiest way is to hire a car with a driver. Public transport to Kayabwe is possible, but it involves several changes, and it is hard to combine with other stops. With your own vehicle you can stop when you like, take your time, and continue to your next destination without a change of plan.

Pearl Drive Car Rental offers:

  • Chauffeur-driven day trips from Kampala to the Equator and back, with an experienced local driver who knows the road.
  • Self-drive options, if you prefer to set your own schedule.
  • Safari 4×4 vehicles such as the Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser Prado, which combine the Equator stop with a longer trip.
  • Group transport in the Safari Van or Toyota Coaster for families, tour groups, and corporate outings.

Combine the Equator with Other Destinations

Since Kayabwe lies on the road west, it fits naturally into several itineraries:

  • Lake Mburo National Park: a short stop at the Equator on the way, then game drives and boat trips.
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park and Kazinga Channel: cross the Equator on the way to the tree-climbing lions and boat cruise.
  • Lake Bunyonyi and Bwindi: break up the long drive to the southwest.
  • Masaka and the Ssese Islands: an easy weekend route from Kampala.

Practical Tips for Visiting

  • Bring some small cash for crafts, refreshments, and the water demonstration.
  • Carry sunscreen and a hat, since there is little shade at the monument.
  • Agree on the price before the water demonstration, as guides may ask for a tip.
  • Allow 45 minutes to an hour for the stop, longer if you want to shop.
  • Ask your driver to time the stop with a lunch break on longer journeys.
