A 3-day gorilla trekking safari in Rushaga is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in Uganda. This journey takes you from Entebbe through the beautiful countryside of Uganda to the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where you have the opportunity to trek and see the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Recently, we completed an exciting 3-day gorilla trekking safari to Rushaga, starting with an early morning pick-up from Entebbe International Airport. The trip included a stop at the Equator, lunch in Mbarara, scenic stopovers along the journey, accommodation in Rushaga, gorilla trekking, a community experience, a Batwa cultural experience and a return journey to Entebbe.
Here is how our three-day journey unfolded.

Day 1: Entebbe Airport to Rushaga
Our journey started very early in the morning. At 5:00 am, our guide, Ali the Guide, picked up the guests from Entebbe International Airport to begin the long but exciting journey towards Rushaga.
The drive from Entebbe to Bwindi is a great opportunity to experience the changing landscapes of Uganda. We travelled through Kampala and continued towards western Uganda, enjoying views of towns, countryside and beautiful landscapes along the way.
Our first major stop was at the Uganda Equator, where we arrived at around 10:00 am. This was a perfect opportunity for the guests to stretch, take photographs and experience one of Uganda’s most popular landmarks. The Equator stop also gave us time to enjoy the atmosphere before continuing with our journey towards Mbarara.
After leaving the Equator, we continued towards Mbarara, one of the major towns in western Uganda. By lunchtime, we stopped at Ishanyu Restaurant, where the guests had a chance to relax and enjoy lunch after several hours on the road.
After lunch, we continued our journey south towards Kabale. As we travelled deeper into southwestern Uganda, the scenery became even more impressive. The landscapes changed from open countryside to rolling hills and beautiful highland views.
We made another stopover in Kabale at Numba Coffee, where everyone had a chance to rest and refresh before completing the final part of the journey to Rushaga.
Later in the day, we finally arrived in Rushaga, located near the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Our accommodation for the night was at Kaara Mountain Lodge.
After checking in, the guests had time to relax and prepare for the main highlight of the safari: gorilla trekking the following day. After such a long journey from Entebbe, the peaceful environment and beautiful views around Rushaga provided a perfect place to rest.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking, Community Walk and Batwa Experience

The second day was the most exciting day of our safari. We started the morning early and headed to the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices in Rushaga for the gorilla trekking briefing.
Before entering the forest, all trekkers attended a briefing where they received important information about the gorilla trekking experience. The guides explained the rules and expectations during the trek, including how visitors should behave around the mountain gorillas.
After the briefing, the trekking adventure officially began.
Our group entered the forest at around 9:00 am. Gorilla trekking is an adventure that takes visitors through the natural environment of Bwindi. The experience can involve walking through forest trails, hills and uneven terrain as trackers and guides lead visitors towards the location of the assigned gorilla family.
The trek was both challenging and rewarding. Being surrounded by the beautiful forest and knowing that mountain gorillas were somewhere ahead made every part of the journey exciting.
After several hours of trekking, we successfully completed our gorilla experience. The entire trekking activity lasted from approximately 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.
Seeing mountain gorillas in their natural environment is a truly special experience. Watching these gentle and powerful animals interact with each other in the forest creates memories that can last a lifetime. For many visitors, gorilla trekking in Rushaga is the highlight of their entire trip to Uganda.
After the gorilla trekking experience, we did not immediately return to the lodge. Instead, we continued with another interesting part of the safari: a community walk experience.
The community experience gave the guests an opportunity to learn more about the people living around Bwindi. Community tourism is an important part of visiting the Rushaga area because it allows travellers to experience local culture and interact with communities surrounding the national park.
We also continued with the Batwa cultural experience. The Batwa are historically connected to the forests of southwestern Uganda, and the experience gave our guests an opportunity to learn more about their culture, traditions and history.
After a full day of adventure, wildlife and cultural experiences, we returned to Kaara Mountain Lodge for the evening. It was time to relax, enjoy the peaceful environment and rest after an unforgettable day in Rushaga.
Day 3: Rushaga to Entebbe International Airport

On the third and final day, we began our journey back from Rushaga to Entebbe.
After checking out from the lodge, we started the long drive through southwestern and central Uganda. Although it was the final day of the safari, the journey itself was another opportunity to enjoy Uganda’s beautiful scenery.
After travelling for most of the day, we eventually reached the Entebbe area. Before taking the guests to the airport, we made a final stop for dinner at Middle East Restaurant.
Dinner was a good opportunity to relax and reflect on the entire three-day adventure. From the early morning airport pick-up to the Equator, the scenic drive through western Uganda, the gorilla trekking adventure, community walk and Batwa experience, the safari had been filled with memorable moments.
After dinner, we continued to Entebbe International Airport, where we finally dropped off our guests and completed the 3-day gorilla trekking safari.
